הוד is the eighth of the Sefiros (ספירות), commonly translated as "splendor," "glory," "majesty," or "acknowledgment." It sits on the left side of the lower triad of the Sefiros, opposite Netzach (נצח), and belongs to the group of middos (emotional koichos) that emerge from the mochin (intellectual koichos) above.
Hod acts as a merkavah (vehicle) for the hashpo'ah of Gevurah (גבורה), channeling its power in a measured, refined, and structured way. While Netzach pushes outward with determination and persistence, Hod reflects inward with submission and hachno’oh. Together they are the "shtei raglayim"—the two legs—that bring down the higher koichos into po’el mamash.
נצח and הוד
נצח and הוד are paired attributes that represent the endurance and deliberation needed to express the intellect in a way that can impact others. For example, נצח of חכמה refers to the resolve that one’s intellectual insight should prevail over opposition.[1]
Physically, they are referred to as the “two thighs,” or “two halves of one body, like twins,” as they support and carry out the influence of the upper traits.[2][3]
In the analogy of the “kidneys that advise,” נצח and הוד function like inner guides: they help determine how the intellectual emotions should be expressed. For example, when a father teaches his son, he must balance giving as much as the child can handle (Chesed) while holding back what is too much (Gevurah). The adjustment process itself is attributed to נצח and הוד.[4]
- נצח represents endurance, initiative, and prevailing over opposition.
- הוד emphasizes restraint, humility, and the dignity of expression.
On a broader emotional level, נצח and הוד channel חסד and גבורה into action, forming the right and left legs of emotional expression.[5]
Yesodos and Inyonim of Hod
- Hoda'ah and Hachno’oh – Hod is the koach to be modeh al ho’emes—even when it’s beyond seichel. It’s the bittul ha'emet that comes from da'as elyon.
- Hod vehadar – Hod is the inner splendor and hispa’arus that comes through tzimtzum and seder. It’s not a loud beauty—it’s the refined beauty of bittul.
- Anovoh – Hod is the true anovoh of a Yid who knows that “anochi afar va’eifer” and yet davka through this, becomes a keli for gilui Elokus.
- Tzimtzum and Seder – Hod gives seder and gvul to the hispa’alus of the middos, especially Gevurah, making it able to be mislabesh in avoidah b’poel.
- Hakaras Hatov – Hod is deeply tied to being makir tov—recognizing and thanking the Eibershter for every prat in briyah and hashgochah protis.
